One Korea Network (OKN) and the Korea-US Alliance Foundation USA (KUSAF-USA) Participate in the 16th Annual Roll Call of Nations Wreath Laying Ceremony, Joined by North Korean Defector Delegation; Hosted by the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation

One Korea Network (OKN) and the Korea-US Alliance Foundation USA (KUSAF-USA) participated in the annual Roll Call of Nations Wreath Laying Ceremony honoring the more than 100 million worldwide victims of communism, hosted by the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation (VOC), in Washington, D.C., on Friday.
원코리아네트워크(OKN)와 한미동맹재단-USA (KUSAF-USA)는 지난 금요일 워싱턴 D.C.에서 공산주의희생자추모재단(VOC)의 주최로 열린 전 세계 1 억 명 이상의 공산주의 희생자를 기리는 연례 헌화 행사 “롤콜 오브 네이션스” 에 참가했다.
This year, OKN and KUSAF-USA were joined by the first-ever large North Korean Defectors Delegation (EIGHT North Korean defectors) led by the Free Korean Association (FKA), comprised of North Korean defectors who have resettled in the United States, which laid a wreath to honor and remember the North Korean victims of communism.
올해는 미국에 정착한 탈북민들로 구성된 자유조선인협회(FKA)가 이끄는 대규모 탈북자 대표단(총 8 명)이 처음으로 참여해 북한의 공산주의 희생자들을 기리고 추모하는 화환을 헌화했다.
The second in-person Ceremony held since the loosening of COVID-19 restrictions, more than a dozen embassies, and more than 50 representatives of captive nations, human rights NGOs, and think tanks joined at the Memorial to remember and honor the worldwide victims of this evil ideology. In addition to OKN, KUSAF-USA, and FKA, Henry Song, the Washington, D.C. Director of OKN, personally represented SIX South Korea-based North Korean defector and human rights organizations in representing the people of North Korea, who have been enslaved by the tyrannical, dictatorial Kim Family regime for more than seven decades, and in which more than 2 million North Koreans have perished.
코로나 19 제한 조치가 완화된 후 두 번째로 개최된 대면 행사에는 12 개국 이상의 대사관과 50 개 이상의 포로국 대표단체, 인권 단체, 싱크탱크 등이 참석해 공산주의 사상이 야기한 전 세계의 희생자들을 기억하고 기리는 시간을 가졌다. 원코리아네트워크(OKN)의 헨리 송 디렉터는 OKN, 한미동맹재단-USA, 자유조선인연합 이외에도 200 만 명 이상 사망한 북한의 희생자들과 현재도 김씨 일가 정권의 노예로 살아가고 있는 북한 주민들을 위해 한국에서 활동하는 여섯 개의 북한인권 단체들을 대표하여 헌화했다.
KUSAF-USA participated for the first time, signifying the importance and the critical role of the ROKUS Alliance in deterring the North Korean regime and meeting the challenges posed by the North Korean threat for the past 70 years, and defending and protecting the national security of both South Korea and the United States.
한미동맹재단-USA 는 처음으로 헌화식에 참여해 북한 정권을 억제하고 북한의 위협에 대응하며, 한미 양국의 국가 안보를 지키고 수호하는 데 있어 한미동맹의 중요성과 막중한 역할을 보여주었다.
More importantly, the Republic of Korea Embassy participated in the Ceremony by laying a wreath for the first time in six years; the South Korean Embassy did not participate during the last administration under Moon Jae-in.
특별히 주미 대한민국 대사관이 지난 문재인 정부 시절 내내 불참한 이후 6 년 만에 처음으로 화환을 헌화하고 행사에 참석했다는 점에서 더욱 의미있는 행사였다.
“The world must remember the people of North Korea who have suffered so much under the brutal dictatorship of the Kim Family Regime, and now under Kim Jong Un for the past decade. As one of the few remaining communist countries left in the world, we need to continue to remind the world of the suffering of the people inside the country and how they are deprived of rights and freedom that we enjoy in the outside world,” said Henry Song, the Director of OKN.
원코리아네트워크의 헨리 송 디렉터는 “전 세계는 지난 10 년 동안 북한 주민들이 김씨 일가 정권의 잔혹한 독재, 그리고 현재도 김정은 정권 하에서 많은 고통을 겪어 왔다는 것을 기억해야 한다”라며, “전 세계에 얼마 남지 않은 공산주의 국가 중 하나로서 우리는 북한 주민들이 당하는 고통과 외부세계로부터 차단당해 모든 권리와 자유를 박탈당하는 실상을 계속 전 세계에 알려야 한다”라고 전했다.
Regarding the Embassy of the Republic of Korea’s participation this year, Song continued: “The presence and participation by the South Korean Embassy reflect President Yoon Suk Yeol’s new direction and policies regarding North Korea and the importance placed by the Yoon administration on North Korean human rights and defectors and the plight of the people of North Korea, as well as spotlighting the dangers and threat posed by the communism and socialism of the regime, to the ROK- USA Alliance. It is very refreshing and great to see the South Korean Embassy at the wreath-laying ceremony today.”
송 디렉터는 또한 올해 주미 대한민국 대사관의 참석과 관련해 “대한민국 대사관이 행사에 참석하고 헌화식에 참여했다는 사실은 윤석열 대통령의 북한에 대한 새로운 방향과 정책, 그리고 북한 인권과 탈북자의 대한 윤석열 정부의 우선순위를 반영하는 것이다”라며, “이로써 공산주의 및 사회주의 정권이 한미동맹에 야기하는 위험성과 위협을 잘 조명했다고 생각한다. 대한민국 대사관이 오늘 헌화식에 참여하는 모습은 매우 신선하고 만족스러웠다.”라고 밝혔다.
Free Korean Association (FKA) President “Ahn,” who is a US-resettled North Korean defector, said, “It was a great honor to lay a wreath along with my fellow North Koreans today to honor and remember the victims in North Korea of the cruel Kim family dictatorship.”
미국에 정착한 탈북민 출신인 자유조선인협회(FKA)의 안 회장은 “오늘 동료 탈북민들과 함께 김씨 일가의 잔인한 독재로 인한 북한 내 희생자들을 기리고 기억하기 위해 화환을 헌화할 수 있어서 큰 영광이었다”라고 전했다.
“It is wonderful that the VOC Foundation remembers all the worldwide victims of communism, including those from North Korea,” said S. Seo, another North Korean defector, and member of FKA.
또 다른 탈북민이자 FKA 멤버인 “서” 씨는 “VOC 재단이 북한을 포함, 전 세계 공산주의 희생자들을 기억하는 것을 매우 멋진 일이다”라고 소감을 밝혔다.
“Hearing the name of the South Korean Embassy read out loud and seeing the ROK Embassy officials lay a wreath and pay respects for the North Korean victims of communism, was really moving and made me feel that the South Korean government now really cares about the defectors and that President Yoon is going in the right direction when it comes to dealing with North Korea,” said Sophia L, a defector who lives in Maryland.
메릴랜드에 거주 중인 탈북민 소피아 씨는 “헌화식 때 한국 대사관이 호명되어 대사관 관계자들이 북한의 공산주의 희생자들을 기리기 위해 화환을 놓고 추모하는 모습을 보았을 때 매우 감동을 받았다”라며, “한국 정부가 탈북민들에게 정말 관심을 갖고 윤석열 대통령이 북한 문제와 관련해 올바른 방향으로 가고 있다는 것을 느낄 수 있었다”라고 말했다.
Following the wreath-laying Ceremony, Director Henry Song of OKN led the North Korean defector delegation to the “Victims of Communism Museum” for a special visit, which was the largest visit of North Korean defectors to the Museum.
헌화식 후 헨리 송 디렉터는 탈북민 대표단을 이끌고 “공산주의 희생자 박물관”을 방문했는데, 이렇게 많은 탈북민이 방문한 것은 박물관 개관 이후 처음이다.
Today’s annual event also included the awarding of the “Truman Reagan Medal of Freedom” to Bhuchung K. Tsering, a Tibetan-American writer, diplomat, and activist who left his homeland in 1960 and has been a tireless advocate for the Tibetan people.
이번에 개최된 행사에서는 “트루먼 레이건 자유의 메달” 수여식 또한 진행되었는데, 올해는 1960 년 고국을 떠나 티벳 주민들을 위해 지속적인 활동을 펼쳐 온 티베트계 미국인 작가이자 외교관, 그리고 운동가인 부청 K. 체링에게 메달이 수여되었다.
