An active voice against the “Peace on the Korean Peninsula Act”(H.R. 3446) came out and caught people’s attention at the recently-ended Conservative Political Action Conference(CPAC), the largest conservative event in the United States. Han Deok-in reports.
The four-day-long Conservative Political Action Conference 2022 was held in Orlando, Florida at the end of February. On the third day of the Conference, a special video was screened to actively oppose the so-called “Peace on the Korean Peninsula Peace Act” introduced by the US House of Representatives last year and caught the attention of the audience.
This video, which was screened on February 26, was produced by the Korean Conservative Political Action Conference(KCPAC), known to be linked to the CPAC of the United States. In this video, KCPAC claimed that the Peace on the Korean Peninsula Act should be withdrawn immediately since it will lead to a bloody disaster on the Korean Peninsula.
The Peace on the Korean Peninsula Act promotes an end-of-war declaration, a peace treaty, and the establishment of liaison offices in the US and North Korea. It was introduced by the Democratic Party’s Brad Sherman (California), Andy Kim (New Jersey), Grace Meng (New York), and Lo Kanna (California) in May last year, and currently has 33 Democrats and one Republican in support of it.
However, there has not been an official schedule announced yet for the examination of the bill at the House Foreign Relations Committee to move it forward.
The Korean Conservative Political Action Conference(KCPAC) devalued such efforts related to H.R. 3446, saying that “some American politicians such as Representative Grace Meng and Representative Brad Sherman (who proposed the bill) are playing with fire over the Korean Peninsula.”
KCPAC also argued that the “Peace on the Korean Peninsula Act” serves the interests of North Korea and China,” citing that “it could make a mistake of providing a justification for dismantling the UN Command.”
KCPAC said that “the UN Command is a vital platform for security and stability on the Korean Peninsula and has the potential to help achieve the liberalization of North Korea,” and emphasized that “the Korean War is the only case of a United Nations Command being established.”
KCPAC Video: “As the UN Secretary-General clarified in the early 1990s, the UN Command is under the command of the United States. This means that in the event of conflict on the Korean Peninsula, or even if North Korea implodes, the US can mobilize its allies around the world and thus avoid the slow bureaucratic process of the UN.”
